BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (WDTN) — Renters at the Wexford on the Green are cleaning up after flames destroyed their apartments.
Jessica Ononiwu is one of the many left picking up after the fire. She wasn’t home at the time the flames sparked, and after a last minute decision, neither was her dog.
“I usually leave him alone, but something clicked and said take him to the sitter’s, and I did,” said Ononiwu.
Flames started in a second story room Sunday afternoon right next to Ononiwu’s apartment and then spread to the ceiling and attic.
“My entire ceiling has fallen in so everything is covered with the insulation,” said Ononiwu. “There’s no roof. The roof is completely gone.”
Ononiwu moved in just three weeks ago.
“Everything is still in boxes and that’s actually a savior for me. So they can literally just pick up everything. You see them throwing it out the window,” said Ononiwu.
She said she’s covered by renter’s insurance, and the Red Cross as well as family and friends are opening their homes so she has a place to stay. While she’s without an apartment, she’s just thankful that she and her dog are safe.
“I’m just really grateful I wasn’t here,” said Ononiwu.
Building inspectors have been out at the apartments for most of Monday assessing the damage, while other renters tried to see what they could still salvage. The Beavercreek Fire Department says no word yet on what caused the fire. It remains under investigation.
