SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) – One person is dead after a shooting in Springfield Thursday night.
Police say it happened before 6:45 p.m. in the 1400 block of South Yellow Springs Street.
Lieutenant Jeffrey Meyer of the Springfield Police told 2 NEWS it appears to be a robbery gone bad. Police say 19-year-old Shaquan Newby got out of a car and approached 25-year-old Derrick Clerk. Newby produced a handgun while walking toward the porch.
Clerk produced his own handgun and fired at Newby, killing him.
Clerk then took Newby’s car, a Honda Pilot, maroon in color, and fled the scene.
Authorities say the increased criminal activity is a major concern.
“Shootings are always an issue just the rash of violence lately has been out of control and the majority of it has been black-on-black crime and something needs to be done in the neighborhoods to tell people that pulling guns and hooting each other is not the answer,” Meyer said. “We need to resolve our issues without violence.”
Police are still looking for Clerk and want to warn everyone not to approach Clerk if you see him. The weapon used in the shooting was not recovered. Clerk is considered armed and dangerous. If you see him do not approach him and call 911 immediately.
If you have any information on his whereabouts you are asked to call the Springfield Police tip line at (937) 324-7685.
