S.C. couple blames Google Maps for countless vehicles being directed down their remote driveway

(WSPA) – A local couple says they’re frustrated with Google Maps directing countless vehicles to their driveway.

They say the drivers enter other addresses into their GPS devices, but continue to be led to their Pisgah Forest home.

It’s been a problem for three years, but continues getting worse.

“Our driveway is a road according to Google and beyond it is a highway,” said homeowner Barbara Axel.

In reality, it couldn’t be much further from a highway. The private drive leading up to the couple’s home is one lane, steep, with sharp turns, and without any space to turn around.

The Axels showed 7 On Your Side more than 50 video clips of vehicles struggling to maneuver their way out — all taken in the last six months.

Trying to do all they can, the couple put up a no exit sign at the beginning of their uphill, private drive. Their neighbors also added one, reading, ‘no thru traffic.’

They say the signs haven’t worked.

“Nobody looks at the signs anyway because they look at the GPS,” said Barbara Axel.

While it may be a nuisance for the couple, for others nearby, the GPS problem could mean much worse.

“Somebody could die if the first responders go to the wrong address,” said Joel Axel.

Just recently, the Axels caught an ambulance, along with other first responders, confused after ending up in their driveway.

They say that confusion likely took up minutes of precious time for the person actually in need.

The Axels have tried to contact Google, but haven’t had any luck getting the map mixup resolved. 7 On Your Side also reached out to officials with Google. We’re waiting to hear back.
