Speaker discusses exotic animals in Dayton

A keynote speaker at the Safety Conference and Symposium discussed the recent Germantown Township animal seizure.

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Exotic animals are taking center stage once again.

The Safety Conference and Symposium Wednesday evening featured filmmaker Mike Webber who created a documentary called, “The Elephant in the Living Room.”

The film addresses people housing exotic animals in the community.

With the recent exotic animal seizure in German Township, Webber said it’s a perfect example of the issues some states are facing.

“The bear confiscation the past couple of weeks is a good example of the growing pains we’re going to run into here in Ohio; both with those trying to enforce a new and relatively new and less stringent law, and the people who own these animals who are accustomed to not having any regulations whatsoever,” he said.

Ohio has come a long way in terms of regulation, Webber said.

Animal welfare and public safety are still concerns.
