Community construction project helps local veteran

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Volunteers from Fifth Third Bank and “Rebuild Together” helped a Dayton army veteran beautify his home.

Friday, they did yard work for Gail Wayne Smith who served in the military for 21 years. He said he was ecstatic to have the help.

“Without the funds and without their help, I’d still be living in shambles like a hermit, but they’ve opened me up,” said Gail Wayne Smith.

“We believe that he has paid an enormous toll for us to do what we need to do, and this is just a token of appreciation that we’re able to give back to Mr. Smith and to veterans,” said Mark Walton, Director of Community and Economic Development. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
