MIAMI TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) – A theft suspect tried to avoid police by jumping off an escalator, landing on his head in the process.

According to Miami Township Police, Marcel Wallace attempted to change several price tags Saturday in the Macy’s store within the Dayton Mall with the help of his sister Jessica Wallace, who was a cashier.

Marcel Wallace was approached by Dayton Mall security on the second level of the store and eventually ran toward an escalator. Police say he then ran down the up escalator toward a uniformed Miami Township Police officer who was coming up the escalator.

Marcel Wallace lunged over the handrail and officer attempted to catch him. The officer couldn’t catch him, and Wallace fell, hitting his head.

He was transported to Kettering Hospital for treatment of his injuries. He was charged with theft and obstructing official business while his sister was charged with theft.
