Hardware stores see fewer winter supplies sold during warm spell

MIAMISBURG, Ohio (WDTN) — With temperatures getting into the sixties, people are trading their snowblowers for lawnmowers.

“Two years ago, we had blizzards galore,” said Richard Newcomb. “Last year was kind of mild. This year, who knows what it’s going to bring next week.”

It was not quite the sight you would expect to see near the end of December inside the Ace Hardware Store in Miamisburg.

Snow shovels were full stocked, sleds were piled neatly, and pallets were full of salt as customers opt for more fall and spring projects with the warm weather.

“We had a little bit of salt sales when there was an actual hint of snow,” said Newcomb. “Everyone is finishing off fall projects and getting ready for spring which may come around in two more or three more weeks the way it is looking right now.”)

The store manager said he has sold the same amount of lawnmowers as snowblowers in December which is out of the ordinatry.

Instead of salt, Newcomb said customers are asking for mulch as they go outdoors to do garden work.

“I’m liking the weather,” said Newcomb. “We’re selling stuff we’re not expecting to sale. The stuff we’re supposed to be selling… well, hopefully there will be snow some time.”
