SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A San Francisco police recruit is being hailed as a hero after he helped bring a 2-month old baby back to life.

The soon-to-be-officer used training that he had just learned in the academy. And he might be needing that skill again in the future.

“I was not sure if it’ll work,” Ricky Williams said. “They tell us it will work, but you are just not sure.”

But he trusted his gut.

Williams will graduate from the San Francisco Police Academy in January. His quick-thinking at a San Leandro Target parking lot showed he is ready for the job.

“She’s like, ‘Oh my god. Oh my god. My baby is not breathing,” Williams said.

The 25-year-old said while off-duty on Dec. 13, he was going to buy supplies for his class. When his girlfriend noticed a hysterical woman standing by a car, they walked over to help.

And the woman handed Williams her lifeless 2-month old baby boy.

“His lips were very blue. His tongue was blue, not breathing at all,” Williams said.

The officer recruit knew exactly what to do–CPR.

In the back seat of the woman’s car, he began compressions.

“In a high-stress situation, I couldn’t fall back on anything but my training here,” Williams said.

The baby is expected to be just fine.

And Williams said he wants no praise, but instead, just parents to take a page from his police training. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
