CHARLOTTE, N.C. (NBCNews) – One person was killed in a confrontation with police as hundreds of Christmas Eve shoppers were evacuated from a suburban Charlotte, North Carolina, mall after a series of gunshots erupted Thursday.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg County police told NBC News that officers working off-duty as security officers at the Northlake Mall, about 8 miles north of downtown Charlotte, responded to an altercation between two groups of people about 2 p.m. ET.
They discovered that one man was armed. He was shot during the confrontation with officers and was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.
