Tornado confirmed in Darke County

Storm approaching Arcanum

WILMINGTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The National Weather Service in Wilmington has confirmed a tornado near Arcanum in Darke County.

According to the NWS, the damage that was found at Arcorn Builders had evidence of back-splatter.

The report is preliminary, but it does classify the tornado as an EF0. The tornado touched down at 5:07 p.m. and had an estimated maximum wind speed of 65 miles per hour.

An EF0 class tornado can have winds between 65 and 85 miles per hour.

No determination has been made yet about the incident in Miami County. The Miami County Emergency Management Agency took a look at the damage Thursday morning and told 2 NEWS they were sending their finding to the National Weather Service and the decision about whether that was a tornado or not.

A tornado has also been confirmed in Wayne County, Ohio, also an EF0.

According to the website, TornadoHistoryProject.com, there have only been four tornadoes reported in December in Ohio before Wednesday. One was east of Middletown on December 26, 1973.
