BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (WDTN)-It’s a new year and that means a new start for many people wanting to change something in their life. Losing weight and exercising tops that list.
“I guess my new years resolution is to build more muscle,” said Raelyn McDonald. “I’m gonna try so hard to not order as much take out,” said Maranda Castle. Fitworks Assistant Manager, Danielle Glascoe said,”My new years resolution? Oh have a better year than last year.”
The biggest challenge people take on typically has to do with losing weight and getting fit. That’s why you can expect gyms like Fitworks to be a bit more crowded.
“Really crowded. Everyone is always really excited to start their New Year off with a healthy start,” Glascoe.
“Maybe because throughout the year people stop doing it and they make poor choices around the holidays or before that and they want to take initiative in their life and start going in a healthier route,” said McDonald.
But unfortunately a lot of resolutions don’t last long. In fact, research shows one in three will fail within the first week. The rest fizzle out over the next few months
“Usually around March or April, then people will slowly stop coming in,” said Glascoe.
But if you don’t want to be one of those people this year, listen up.
No matter if your resolution is to get to the gym, save money, quit smoking or to learn something new, you can all do a few things to help yourself stick with it.
First off, find a friend that’s working toward the same goal.
“Accountability. Hold yourself accountable. That’s the biggest thing. Work out with friends because friends help you be motivated. A big part of it is who you surround yourself with,” said Castle.
According to Forbes, make sure you have a good reason for your resolution. Pick something you feel passionate about. it will be easier to stick with it.
They also say it’s good to be specific about the resolution and write it down. The biggest piece of advice is to be patient.
“It’s intimidating and it’s hard at first but once you keep going and you get the feel for it. Give yourself two weeks, a month and then you will get into it. Just stick with it,” said McDonald.
How to keep your resolution:
1.) Track your progress
2.) Find a friend
3.) Don’t pick an unrealistic goal
4.) Only make one
5.) Take away temptations
