Vandalia firefighter honored for role preventing tragedy

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A Vandalia firefighter was recognized for his role in saving a woman from tragedy.

Mike Harmon with the Vandalia Fire Department was awarded the Badge of Courage on Saturday.

In July 2015, Harmon and his crew were called to the scene of a possibly suicidal woman.

They found her hanging over the westbound lanes of I-70 after she had climbed onto the overpass.

Harmon was awarded for calmly talking and helping her to safety.

“I’ve never been honored like this before,” said Harmon. “It’s a great honor knowing that the stuff that we do everyday does not go unnoticed.”

Harmon said as long as everyone gets home safely he knows he has done a job well done.
