MARION, Ohio (WCMH) – A 17-year-old girl from Marion who was involved in the 2012 slaying of her stepfather escaped from custody in Cleveland. She was recaptured just after 5:00pm Thursday evening at a McDonald’s on State Route 95 after a citizen recognized her and called 911.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Ashley Smith, 17, walked away from a supervised exercise class Wednesday night at the Applewood Centers in Cleveland.

A Department of Youth Services spokesperson tells NBC4 Smith was participating in a supervised Zumba class when she ran away. Staff members were unable to catch up with her before she was out of sight.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said she was sentenced to five years of juvenile detention in July of 2014 after she was found guilty of complicity to aggravated murder.
