MIAMI COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) – The Miami County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday the car that hit a Milton-Union school bus on January 28 was traveling 101 M.P.H., according to the on-board computer of Chevrolet Cavalier.

The car was driven by 21-year-old Taylor Dickey and Chief Dave Duchak reports she was accelerating when it hit the bus. Additionally, Dickey was not wearing her seat belt.

“I can’t think of no logical reason anybody would be travelling at that rate of speed,” Duchak said. “There’s just no logical explanation for it; the fact that there was no braking or anything else is even more concerning.”

Investigators also found several open and emptied beer cans inside the car on the passenger side and as well surrounding the car at the accident site.

They say there was little the Milton-Union bus driver, Diane Kauffman could do to prevent this. But district administrators and law enforcement say she did do everything to protect the kids on her bus.

2 NEWS reached out to Kauffman, but have not heard back.

Tuesday night, officials are looking at all angles of this investigation, including traffic complaints on the busy Ohio State Route 55 near Kessler-Frederick Road, where last Thursday’s fatal crash happened.

“We patrol those road as often as possible we have limited resources like other agencies but deputies are on them,” the chief deputy detailed. “We also have a speed trailer that we deploy in different areas and we are going to be purchasing a speed box that will be able to record average speed to see if in fact we do have problem in the roadway or not.”

Dickey was ejected from the car she was driving and was pronounced dead on the scene.

The initial autopsy was done late last week and showed Dickey died from multiple trauma. Toxicology tests are being performed, but results from those will not be known for several weeks.
