West Alexandria murder suspect pleads guilty

EATON, Ohio (WDTN) – Tyler Smith, 22, of West Alexandria, entered a guilty plea to a single count of aggravated murder in the Preble County Court of Common Pleas Wednesday.

His trial was set to begin Monday.

In May 2013, just before 6:30 a.m., Smith reportedly called 911 to tell dispatchers that he had “done something bad and needed to go to jail.”

Then, investigators responded to the 5800 block of Lexington Road in West Alexandria to find the body of Jerry Mason on a couch in the living room

Mason had reportedly been shot in the head with a pump shotgun and his body had been covered with a blanket, according to a press release from Preble County Prosecuting Attorney Martin Votel.

Mason was reportedly Smith’s mother’s boyfriend. The three reportedly all lived together at the address.

Sentencing in the case is scheduled for March 15.
