DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – March Madness is just 4 weeks away… and once again, it all tips off right here in the Miami Valley with the First Four.
Area hotels have been filling up for the last few months and Tuesday those 2 NEWS Reporter Jordan Bowen spoke with say they’re as much 90 percent full.
The tournament, which kicks off Tuesday, March 15th at UD Arena, will feature the teams ranked 64th and 65th in the NCAA.
UD Arena has been hosting the gig since 2001 and currently holds the record for hosting more men’s NCAA Divison I tournament basketball games than any other venue.
The event brings about 4.6 million dollars to the local economy. Plenty of tickets are still up for grabs… and for the first time you can buy either day separately.
On the NCAA website, the cheapest tickets are going for $125 dollars for each day. Dayton Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau President Jacquelyn Powell, says it’s event that local businesses have come to depend on.
“People will be coming here and spending money staying in our hotels, dining in our local restaurants, going out to our night clubs, and of course at our retail establishments so that’s all wonderful for our local economy that’s money that’s coming in from outside of the area and being left behind here,” Powell said.
And Powell says they see the biggest uptick in hotel rooms right around selection Sunday… which falls on March 13th of this ye.
