KETTERING, Ohio (WDTN) – Strong winds are believed to have caused three power lines to come down in Kettering. Crews were still working to restore power as of 11 p.m. Friday night.
Fricker’s, Subway, Wendy’s and Dollar General along Woodman Drive all were without power and remained closed Friday night. But one restaurant without power decided to stay open.
“It took down all the lights,” Sima Manager Christie Yu said. “Our credit card machine is down our computer is down so everything we had to do was handwritten. Even the credit cards we had to bring out the old-school machine the one that slides and imprints the card. That was quite interesting.”
Yu says they were hoping the lights would come back on before the dinner rush, when that didn’t happen she says they tried their best to make do with what they had.
“We got the candles lights going,” Yu said. “We got our phone lights up. We had reservations so that’s the only reason we didn’t leave the restaurant open because we’ve already taken their order and their money so we’re not going to close for that reason.”
As a result of the outage, Yu says they lost out on more than 100 customers, costing them big bucks.
“Tonight, I’d say we lost about $2000 dollars,” Yu said. “And that’s quite a big impact. Obviously you have to take into account all the food that’s in the fridge. We a sushi restaurant so all of the fish if you count that in its going to be way more than $2000 dollars.”
Also, being affected by the outage was Owner of Woodman Deli and Grocery. Alaa Almukhtar who says they were out of power for over an hour.
“Unfortunately it was a bad time when it happened to us,” Woodman Deli and Grocery Owner Alaa Almukhtar said. “Its the peak hours to our business. A lot of customers come here.”
