Man arrested after reportedly chasing people with chainsaw

SHELBY COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) — A man reportedly armed with a chainsaw was arrested after a standoff with deputies.

Deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office were called to the 5900 block of State Route 29 East near Sidney after 3 a.m. Saturday on reports of a man chasing people with a chainsaw.

Officials said when they arrived, they found the man inside the home by himself with the chainsaw running. Deputies said the man’s wife and friends ran to a neighbor’s house for safety.

Officials surrounded the home and tried to get the man to come out for more than an hour. Deputies said during this time, the man walked to different windows inside the home and revved the chainsaw.

After more than an hour and 20 minutes the man surrendered peacefully.

Phillip Allen Leonard, 40, was arrested on charges of aggravated menacing, assault, inducing panic, and obstructing official business.

Leonard was first taken to Wilson Health. He told officials he used cocaine and alcohol.

He was booked into the Shelby County Jail.
