NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Tree damage could be found around Newport News on Wednesday.

There was no official cause for the storm damage, but Battalion Chief J. Douglas Carper said it appeared straight line wind could have played a role.

On Cedar Lane in the Warwick on the James neighborhood, dozens of Cedar trees blocked off the street. Some trees also fell on houses.

As of late Wednesday evening, city crews were clearing debris and trees on Cedar Lane. The street was blocked off until 10 p.m.

“I’ve lived here all my life and I’ve been around hurricanes and stuff,” said Danny Milburn. “And I’ve never heard the wind come up against the house like that.”

Milburn said residents assisted fire crews by removing trees with their own personal chainsaws on Wednesday.

No one was injured on Cedar Lane. Contractors were expected to be back out on Thursday morning to continue clearing debris.

A tree also fell on a house on 80th Street in Newport News. A family of six was home at the time when the large tree fell on the back of the house.

“Next thing I know, the tree is coming into the bedroom,” said Mike Boothe, who rents the house.

Fire officials condemned the house. Boothe said he and his wife were only able to grab a few items from the house before they left. They have four children, including a baby. They added, they were grateful the tree didn’t fall at night.

“Just glad no one was hurt,” said Boothe.
