Meth stash gets Illinois man 11 years in prison

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) –  An Illinois man was convicted and sentenced Thursday for possession of more than three kilograms of crystal methamphetamine.

Prosecuting Attorney Mat Heck, Jr. announced Thursday that 24‐year‐old Rene Nevarez‐Reyes, of Palatine, Illinois, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for possessing approximately 3,200 grams of crystal methamphetamine.

According to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office, On October 26, 2014, Nevarez-Reyes’ vehicle was stopped by a Sheriff’s Deputy on I‐75. The deputy’s K‐9 alerted to illegal drugs in the vehicle. A search warrant was obtained and it was discovered that a compartment constructed in the vehicle’s gas tank contained approximately 3,200 grams of crystal methamphetamine, worth approximately $250,000.

On February 27, 2015, the defendant was indicted on one count of Aggravated Possession of Drugs, a first‐degree felony, with major drug offender (MDO) specifications.

Thursday, the defendant entered a plea of no‐contest and was found guilty by the court. Nevarez-Reyes was sentenced to serve 11 years in prison, which is a mandatory sentence because the defendant was indicted with MDO specifications.

Prosecutor Heck added, “Illegal drugs being brought into our community continues to be a problem. Seizing some 7lbs. of crystal meth makes our community safer. We will continue
to hold these offenders responsible and seek the longest prison term possible.”
