RUSSIAVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Police say one central Indiana sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot and another was injured following a gunfight inside a mobile home.

The Howard County Sheriff Steve Rogers announced Sunday afternoon that 27-year-old Deputy Carl Koontz, an almost three year veteran of the Howard County Sheriff Department, died as a result of the injuries.

Deputy Carl Koontz and Sgt. Jordan Buckley were serving warrants at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday in Russiaville, about 60 miles north of Indianapolis, and were fired upon when they entered the home.

Rogers said other officers took Buckley and Koontz from inside the mobile home.

Buckley, a nine-year veteran, is in stable condition. Both men were wearing body armor.

The suspected shooter was found dead inside about two hours later.
