CINCINNATI (AP) — Ohio’s Republican U.S. senator, Rob Portman, says he intends to support his party’s nominee for president, but he really hopes it is Governor John Kasich.

Portman expressed strong disagreement with front-runner Donald Trump’s comments this week about punishing women for abortions if they were banned. Trump subsequently backtracked from that position.

Portman says he likes the Ohio governor much better. Portman told reporters yesterday that he thinks Kasich has “the right experience and the right character” to be a good president, and has a good chance to win in November.

Portman also says he’s making arrangements to meet with President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, although he continues to believe the new justice shouldn’t be decided during an election year.

The first-term senator is seeking re-election this year.
