Lugnuts rally late to finish off sweep of the Dragons

Lansing, Mich. (WDTN) —The Lansing Lugnuts scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to overcome a 6-3 deficit as they defeated the Dayton Dragons 11-6 on Wednesday afternoon.  The Lugnuts completed a sweep of the three-game series with the win.

Amazingly, the two clubs combined for 13 runs in the seventh inning.  The Dragons trailed 3-0 through six innings before exploding for six runs in the top of the seventh, only to see Lansing answer with seven in the bottom of the inning.

Lansing scored three unearned runs in the third and took that 3-0 lead to the seventh.  Dayton’s Narciso Crook blasted a long solo home run with one out in the top of the seventh to get the Dragons started.  After James Vasquez walked and Hector Vargas doubled, Argenis Aldazoro reached on an error to load the bases.  Cory Thompson lined a single to center to drive in Vasquez and make it 3-2.  One batter later, Mitch Piatnik walked to force in a run and tie the game.  Shane Mardirosian lined a single to right to drive in Aldazoro and give the Dragons a 4-3 lead, and Shed Long doubled off the left-center field fence to bring in two more runs and cap off a six-run frame as the Dragons took a 6-3 lead to the bottom of the seventh.

But Lansing would have an even bigger inning.  They collected seven hits and scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to regain the lead at 10-6.  The Lugnuts added another run in the eighth to close out the scoring.

Dayton finished with six hits, five of which came in the seventh inning.  Crook’s home run was his second of the series.

Dragons starting pitcher Jacob Constante worked the first five innings, allowing three runs (all unearned) on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  He retired seven of the last eight batters he faced.  Reliever Jake Johnson was charged with the loss.  He pitched a perfect sixth inning but allowed all seven runs in the seventh.  Five of the seven were earned.

The Dragons (1-6) return home to host the West Michigan Whitecaps (2-3) in a four-game series starting Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.  Jose Lopez (1-0, 1.59), the starting and winning pitcher in the Dragons home opening-day victory, will make his second start.  West Michigan will counter with Spenser Watkins (0-0, 3.86).
