Dragons shutout for 4th time in last 6 games

Burlington, Iowa (WDTN) —The Burlington Bees scored four runs in the first inning and limited the Dayton Dragons to just three hits on the way to a 6-0 victory in the first game of a three-game set on Monday night.

Four Bees pitchers combined to strikeout 10 and walk none.  The only three Dragons hits were a first inning bunt single by Mitch Piatnik, a fifth inning double by Hector Vargas, and an eighth inning single by Brantley Bell.  The Dragons did not advance a runner past second base in the game.

Burlington sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning, collecting four hits and a walk to score four runs.  They added two more in the fifth.

Dragons starting pitcher Jake Johnson (0-3) worked four innings, allowing four runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts to suffer the loss.  Reliever Jesus Reyes, transferred to Dayton from extended spring training earlier in the day, worked four innings in relief of Johnson and allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Dragons (5-20) meet the Bees (10-14) in Burlington again on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. (EDT).  Austin Orewiler (0-1, 2.93) will start for the Dragons against Burlington’s Jose Rodriguez (1-2, 3.93).
