CLIFTON, Ohio (WDTN) – One man was killed and another woman injured in a serious crash on SR-72 north of 343 in Clifton.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol and Greene County Sheriff’s deputies blocked state Route 72 just north of State Route 343 after two vans collided. State Route 72 re-opened later Tuesday afternoon following the crash.
Sgt. Merill Thompson from the Springfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol told 2 NEWS a car ran a stop sign and pulled into the path of a vehicle driving south on State Route 72 Tuesday afternoon. The man who ran through the stop sign was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman driving the southbound vehicle was taken to a Greene County hospital.
Thompson says the accident is still under investigation and they will not release the name or age of the victim until the family is notified.
“It’s a horrible day, it’s a sad day, I wish people would slow down through here.”
A neighbor, Shawna Hendrickson told 2 NEWS she blames speed for the accident. “It’s a horrible day, it’s a sad day, I wish people would slow down through here,” said the neighbor.
Hendrickson continued, “It’s State Route 72, it’s a 55 mile an hour zone so you bet everybody’s doing about 65 or 65 through here. This is a 25 mile an hour street. We see a lot of close calls of people just going too fast.”
Hendrickson says she was the first person on the scene and tried to help an elderly driver who she said was unconscious when she got to him.
