MITCHELL CO., Iowa (KIMT) – If you were driving on Highway 9 on Tuesday, you may have seen a man driving down the road on a 1941 tractor with a trailer attached to the back.

Dewey Brooks is traveling home to Wonewoc, WI after driving the tractor to Mount Rushmore. He’s only able to go about 12 miles an hour and says the entire journey will probably end up being about 2000 miles and 200 hours on the tractor.

The tractor had been sitting in the woods on Brooks’ property, and he told his father several years ago he was going to fix it up.

“I told my dad God-willing I was going to make it run and drive it to Mount Rushmore because I knew the tractor and Mount Rushmore was the same age,” Brooks said. “Dad looked at me, chuckled, and he said you are crazy.”

Brooks says when he got to Mount Rushmore, they gave him a spot up front to park, and sent him home with a bottle of wine celebrating the 75th anniversary.

As for when he gets home, it will be time to relax for both of them.

“Tighten up a few bolts that have loosened and put it back in my family museum that I have,” Brooks said. “And I will probably put up a lot of pictures of the trip around it.”
