KETTERING, Ohio (WDTN) – The future of the Kettering Ice Rink is now in the hands of the public. City officials will hold a special public meeting to get feedback from citizens Wednesday night at the Kettering Rec Center.
After getting survey answers from citizens and focus groups, city officials narrowed down future plans to three options: a multi-sport basketball court, renovating the existing ice rink or turning it into a turf field. Changing the rink to a court or a turf field roughly costs the same price — 5 to 8-million dollars.
The money to fund future projects would come from the city’s general operating fund.
According to surveys conducted by the city, 92-percent of Kettering residents don’t use the ice rink. But of that 92 percent, at least 86 percent agree that it’s a benefit to the community and supports recreational activities for youth.
