SOUTH BEND, Indiana – Reydel Medina’s three-run home run keyed a five-run fifth inning as the Dayton Dragons defeated the South Bend Cubs 6-4 on Wednesday night. The two clubs have split the first two games of the series that will conclude on Thursday.
For the fifth straight game, the Dragons took an early lead. They scored in the third inning, getting three singles from Shane Mardirosian, Brantley Bell, and James Vasquez to take a 1-0 lead. Vasquez’s single brought in the run.
In the fifth, the Dragons exploded for a five-run inning. Zack Shields singled to start the inning and Bell walked. Vasquez singled to load the bases with no one out. Tanner Rahier grounded to third as a run scored to make it 2-0. Shed Long followed with a sharp single to center to drive in Vasquez and make it 3-0, and one batter later, Reydel Medina drilled a three-run home run to right field to give the Dragons a 6-0 lead. The homer by Medina was his first of the season.
South Bend battled back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the seventh. They had the tying run on base in the seventh but did not a hit over the final two innings.
Dragons starting pitcher Jacob Constante (2-6) was strong early in his outing and held on for the win. Constante retired the first 12 batters of the game before allowing a base runner in the fifth. He tossed six and one-third innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts to match his season high. Jeremy Kivel recorded the final two outs in the seventh, allowing a two-run single that brought in runs charged to Constante. Kivel pitched a scoreless eighth inning before Sarkis Ohanian came on for his first save opportunity with the Dragons in the ninth. Ohanian gave up a one-out walk but retired the next two hitters for the save.
The Dragons finished with 14 hits to match the team single-game high in 2016. Vasquez was 3 for 4 with a walk, run scored, and RBI. Shields, Bell, Long, Medina, and Mardirosian each had two hits.
