Cooling off: New fountain is popular Detroit Zoo attraction

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — A new attraction at the Detroit Zoo is proving popular among visitors during hot days.

The fountain is located outside the $30 million Polk Penguin Conservation Center, which opened earlier this year at the zoo in Royal Oak.

The Detroit Free Press reports ( ) the fountain includes more than two-dozen water jets that blast upward and features an outline of Antarctica. During the winter months it will become a 1,100-square-foot ice skating rink.

Nicole Franklin of Ann Arbor, who was accompanied on Sunday by her 3-year-old son, Ashton, and a cousin from South Haven, appreciated the fountain. She said: “This is a good thing when you’re done walking the zoo and are all hot and sweaty to come get wet.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
