Beloit snaps Dragons winning streak

DAYTON, Ohio – The Beloit Snappers collected 16 hits on the way to a 9-5 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Friday night at Fifth Third Field.  The Snappers avoided a sweep of the three-game series and snapped the Dragons three-game winning streak.

The Dragons trailed 1-0 before they erupted for three runs in the third inning.  The rally started with a one out single by Reydel Medina, who stole second and scored on a double by Mitch Piatnik.  Shane Mardirosian followed with a two-run home run to right field to give the Dragons a 3-1 lead.  The homer by Mardirosian was his first of the season.

But Beloit responded with four runs in the fourth inning to regain the lead at 5-3.  They added another run in the top of the sixth to make it 6-3.  The Dragons scored in the bottom of the sixth to pull back within two, as Mardirosian doubled, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Tyler Stephenson’s two-out single to make it 6-4.

Beloit scored single runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to jump ahead 9-4.  The Dragons closed out the scoring with a run in the bottom of the ninth.

Dragons starting pitcher Ty Boyles (2-5) suffered the loss.  He worked six innings, allowing six runs on 12 hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

The Dragons collected seven hits.  Mardirosian led the offense with a homer and double along with two runs batted in and two runs scored.  Piatnik had a double and three walks.

The Dragons (8-13, 29-62) remain home to open a new three-game series against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (10-11, 44-47) at Fifth Third Field on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.  Austin Orewiler (2-8, 3.52) will start for the Dragons against Wisconsin’s Zack Brown (0-1, 4.50).
