CINCINNATI (AP/WLWT) – University of Cincinnati officials have confirmed that a contract worker was killed while performing maintenance on an elevator in the school’s Medical Sciences building.

UC Public Information Officer Michele Ralston says the worker was found dead at the Eden Avenue building around 4:30 p.m. Friday. Investigators believe the death was accidental but didn’t immediately release a cause of death.

According to the University of Cincinnati’s Department of Public Safety, Chris Lane, 42, died while he was working on the elevator. Lane worked for KONE Elevators and Escalators of Cincinnati for 20 years.

Ralston says it’s unclear whether Lane was performing specialized or routine maintenance on the elevator.

The Medical Sciences building remains open for regular business and school activities, but its elevators will be out of service throughout the weekend.

The University of Cincinnati Police Department is leading the investigation.
