CALDWELL COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — Several people died when a hot air balloon crashed in Caldwell County Saturday morning, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The Caldwell County Sheriff’s office said there are likely no survivors.

Federal investigators say at least 16 people were in the balloon when it caught fire in flight, crashing in a field near Lockhart around 7:40 a.m. DPS says some of the passengers died in the wreck but officials are still working to determine how many people died.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are both headed to the scene.

The names of pilots and passengers have not yet been released.

Lockhart is about 30 miles south of Austin.

From 2002-2012, data from the National Transportation Safety Board shows 16 people died in hot air balloon accidents.
