Hot Rods top Dragons 7-2

DAYTON, Ohio – The Bowling Green Hot Rods belted three home runs to increase their league-leading total to 79 for the year as they defeated the Dayton Dragons 7-2 on Saturday night.  The game was the start of a four-game series.

Bowling Green took the lead with one run in the third inning and added another run in the top of the fifth. The Dragons scored in the bottom of the fifth when Chris Okey was hit by a pitch and scored from first on Shane Mardirosian’s double to right field to make it 2-1.

But Bowling Green responded with a three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh, all on home runs, to extend their lead to 7-1.  The Dragons closed out the scoring in the seventh when Okey walked and eventually scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 7-2.

Dragons starting pitcher Tanner Rainey (3-9) was charged with the loss.  He worked five innings, allowing four runs on four hits with five walks and five strikeouts.  Sandy Lugo replaced Rainey with two men on base in the sixth and surrendered a three-run home run to Bowling Green’s David Rodriguez.  Lugo then allowed back-to-back homers in the seventh.  Lugo was charged with three runs in two innings of work, striking out four.  Ryan Hendrix worked two scoreless innings for the Dragons to close out the game.

The Dragons finished with just six hits.  Brantley Bell and Shane Mardirosian each had two.

The Dragons (12-22, 33-71) host the Hot Rods (21-13, 58-45) on Sunday at 2:07 p.m. at Fifth Third Field in the second game of the series.  Alex Webb, just called up from Billings on Wednesday, will make his Dragons debut as the starting pitcher.  Jose Mujica (5-3, 4.17) will start for Bowling Green.
