A couple of sweeps started the day for the men’s volleyball quarterfinals Wednesday with Russia and the U.S. advancing.
The four winners will square off against each other in the semifinals Friday.
Russia gets a shot to defend its title
The Russian men’s volleyball team took home the gold at the 2012 Olympics in London and they’ll get an opportunity to do so again at the Rio Games.
The stage looked too big and the brights too light for the upstart Canadians as Russia easily rolled past them in straight sets.
That pits Russia against the winner of Brazil and Argentina in the semifinals. The winner will go on to the gold medal game while the loser will play for bronze.
U.S. in cruise control now
The United States men’s volleyball team has won four matches in a row after dropping the first two (which included a sweep at the hands of Canada in the Olympic opener).
Poland – the No. 2 team in the world – became the Americans’ latest victim, losing in three sets to end any hopes of taking home a medal.
The U.S. will take on the winner of Italy and Iran in the semifinals Friday.
