U.S. long jumpers claim gold, silver

Tianna Bartoletta and Brittney Reese

Gold: Tianna Bartoletta (United States)
Silver: Brittney Reese (United States)
Bronze: Ivana Spanovic (Serbia)

U.S. long jumpers finished one-two Wednesday night in Rio.

Tianna Bartoletta won the gold medal, leaping 7.17m (23 feet, 6 ¼ inches). She also entered the 100m sprint in Rio, but did not advance to the final.

Brittney Reese earned the silver medal with a jump of 7.15m (23-5½).  Reese, who is nicknamed “Da Beast,” considered retiring in the years since winning gold in London. She tore a hip labrum in 2013, beginning what she described as “the toughest two years of my life.” She returned to form this year, winning the world indoor championship.

Darya Klishina, the lone track and field athlete representing Russia in Rio, finished ninth.

In the men’s long jump competition, American Jeff Henderson won the gold medal by the smallest of margins on Saturday. His best jump, 8.38m (27-6), was just one centimeter better than Luvo Manyonga’s mark.
