CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – A family’s pet is being called a hero after saving an infant during a fire last weekend.
Erika Poremski left her house to get something from her car when her home was quickly engulfed in flames. She says she tried to rescue her eight-month-old daughter, but the heavy smoke made it impossible to breathe.
When firefighters arrived, they found the family’s dog laying on top of the girl, covering her with his entire body.
Paramedics were able to revive the little girl, but the dog did not survive.
Poremski told 22News, “Knowing he was there with her, maybe she wasn’t as scared when I heard her, and he stayed with her the whole time. He could’ve ran downstairs and he didn’t.”
Erika says her daughter is in serious condition.
No other injuries were reported in the fire, but paramedics are working to determine the cause of the fire.
