Heartbreaking photo of couple forced into seperate nursing homes is going viral

VANCOUVER, Canada (WCMH) — A Facebook post showing an elderly couple crying and saying goodbye to each other after being forced into separate nursing homes is going viral.

According to CNN, Wolf and Anita Gotthschalk have been married for 62 years, but for the last eight months, the couple has been forced to live apart after they were admitted to separate nursing homes.

In the viral Facebook post from an Ashely Bartyik  on August 23, she says the couple was separated because of backlogs and delays in the health care system that keeps her grandpa from being moved to the Morgan nursing home, the same one as his wife Anita.

“They cry every time they see each other, and it is heartbreaking,“ she says in the post.

She says her grandpa has dementia and was just diagnosed with lymphoma.

“His Dementia is growing ever stronger each day, but his memory of my grandmother has not faded a inch…yet. We are afraid however that if they are living apart much longer, his memory of her won’t stay.”

Bartyik tells CTV, she just wants her grandparents to be together again. “Time is running out. We’re just asking for anything to be done, any strings that can be pulled, anything at all that can happen so that the Morgan can accommodate him as soon as possible.”
