DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is working to disassemble local gangs by hiring a new detective to the force.
Deputy Brian Shiverdecker was promoted to Detective of Special Investigations last week. He tells 2 NEWS that his main focus will be on adult and youth gangs in the Miami Valley.
To date, there are at least 300 gang members living in the region, the sheriff”s office reports. Shiverdecker says most of them are minors.
“Each time we take a closer look into it to further ourselves, we find younger and younger members,” he said.
Shiverdecker started as a Montgomery County Jail officer in 2005 and worked his way up to deputy where he patrolled the streets for more than a decade tracking down gang members.
“If you don’t think it can happen, I am here to tell you, you’re wrong. We’ve had gang members in Centerville, Kettering and some of our local guys have reached as far as Middletown,” said Shiverdecker.
Now, instead of patrolling the streets, he’ll be tracking down gang members through other avenues like social media.
“We pay attention to social media, we also pay attention to prior contacts with law enforcement, and we listen to schools when they have a problem,” he said.
Gangs are growing at an alarming rate and commit violent crimes like aggravated robberies and burglaries, he said.
“The need has reached a point to where we should probably have a dozen guys doing what I do,” said Shiverdecker.
He also plans on pushing for tougher charges when it comes to getting gang members behind bars. He says he’s working to get the prosecutor’s office and judges on the same page.
