Report: Ryan Lochte will be suspended by US Olympic Committee and USA Swimming

Ryan Lochte

(NBC News) Ryan Lochte is expected to be suspended by the US Olympic Committee and USA Swimming on Thursday.

According to a report from TMZ Sports, Lochte is being suspended for 10 months by both organizations.

The 12-time Olympic Medal winner, along with three other USA swimmers, initially told police they had been held up by armed men posing as Rio police officers during the Olympic games.

It was later revealed that Lochte made most of the story up. The incident caused a firestorm of media interest and resulted in a major black eye for the United States Olympic Team during the games.

This would mean that Lochte won’t be able to compete at a World Championships or at the Olympics until 2019. It dents any hope he had of breaking Michael Phelps’ record of 33 world championship medals.

Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger, and Jimmy Feigen will also be punished, but not as severely as Lochte. USA Swimming and the U.S. Olympic Committee have not confirmed the punishments, according to NBC News. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
