KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A Knoxville eight-year-old is fighting for his life, diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of cancer, but his best friend isn’t letting him do it on his own, going as far as shaving his own head and helping organize a fundraiser to help his friend’s family.
CJ Hardy and Lucas Jones are best friends, but instead of playing Star Wars or Nerf battles together like they used to, they are having to deal with a very adult issue. Lucas has cancer and three weeks ago, CJ shaved his head – because that’s what best friends do.
“I wanted to shave my hair because I didn’t want Lucas to feel alone if it came back,” CJ said.
Lucas was diagnosed in March with rhabdomyosarcoma, a very rare and aggressive cancer that calls for months of treatment and chemotherapy. Even with all that, he’s only been given a 20 to 30 percent chance of survival.
“When we’re driving and my son says, ‘Mom, I found out Lucas has lost his hair and I want to shave my head for him,’ it brought tears to my eyes,” said CJ’s mom Jessica Hardy.
“With Lucas, he does understand this is very serious for him, and I think this is what motivates [CJ] even more to push forward and try to help him,” said Jessica Hardy.
A GoFundMe page has also been set up to help Lucas’s family.
