College student expelled over Snapchat photo

MANHATTAN, Kan. (KSNT) – Students at Kansas State University are in an uproar over a photo one K-State student posted on Snapchat last week.

It started with the photo Paige Shoemaker posted, showing Shoemaker and friend Sadie Meier wearing cosmetic mud masks, along with the caption “Feels good to finally be a n*****”.

The photo quickly made its way to Facebook, where Kansas State University was tagged.

“We want people to know this is not blackface. We did not paint our faces intentional,” Shoemaker later said.

She also went on to defend the caption.

“I mean, not that this is a good thing but we kind of like, that word kind of happens in our friend group, we know that everyone is calm. We’re a big family so that word does not offend anyone in our group,” Shoemaker said.

Kansas State student Lani Sandoval says the Snapchat was like “a bullet to the heart.”

“I just feel like we’re being set back 150 years,” Abbey St. Clair, another student, said. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
