TROTWOOD, Ohio (WDTN) — The father of the man who was shot in Trotwood Monday night spoke out Tuesday.
The grieving father told 2 NEWS his son was working to turn his life around and wants to know what happened.
The Montgomery County Coroner Tuesday released the identity of the man shot in Trotwood on Monday night.
The Coroner says the victim is 23-year-old Jerron J. McDowell.
Police say they received a call around 9:30 p.m. on Monday of multiple shots fired in the 5400 block of Olive Road.
When officers arrived, they found McDowell with several gunshot wounds. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital where he died from his injuries.
Investigators were working to reconstruct the scene in the aftermath of the shooting, Trotwood Police Chief Erik Wilson said it appears multiple people and multiple guns were involved.
“It appears that they met someone here and some type of altercation took place where a gun battle ensued,” Wilson said.
The shooting took place on a busy stretch of road in Trotwood and Wilson said this type of crime in this area was unusual.
“This type of activity up here is definitely a first,” Wilson said. “This is not common.”
“This is a pretty busy street right here, in a main thoroughfare,” Wilson said. “Yes, this is definitely an unusual occurrence.”
Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots, and several shell casings were visible at the scene. Wilson said there could be other victims, adding that area hospitals had been alerted to notify police if any victims showed up for treatment of gunshot wounds.
Two cars at the scene were damaged by gunfire and were being held as evidence was collected. Wilson said surrounding homeowners would need to check their properties in the morning to determine if their homes were damaged by gunfire.
Police say there is surveillance video of the incident from a nearby convenience store. That video is not being released at this time as the investigation continues.
The Trotwood Police Department is expected to release more information about the shooting on Tuesday.
