MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WDTN) – Middletown police said Thursday they have charged four people in connection with a murder-for-hire investigation.
Middletown Police detectives have been investigating the case and say 42-year-old Shelly Carter paid someone $500 to murder her estranged husband.
Police and deputies from Butler County searched Carter’s home in the 6200 block of Browns Run Road in Middletown on Wednesday. Shortly after that, they found Carter and her boyfriend, Ryan Stark, of Cincinnati, in the Madison Inn.
Investigators say Stark had a .22 caliber handgun with him and also has a previous felony conviction which prevents him from having a gun. Stark was charged with weapons charges and booked into the Middletown City Jail.
Detectives found that Shelly Carter paid someone $500 to kill her husband and would pay him another $500 and give them a car after the murder was done. Police say Carter “did not care if her two children were in harm’s way when the murder was to take place.” Carter directed the person she paid on where and how to commit the murder, according to investigators.
Carter admitted to the murder attempt and was charged with three counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated murder and is in the Middletown City Jail.
Detectives learned another couple was also involved in the plot. Casey and Sarah Fryman were charged with one count each of conspiracy to commit aggravated murder and also booked into the Middletown City Jail.
The case is still under investigation.
