DAYTON (WDTN) — The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim in Friday morning’s shooting as 34-year-old Thomas Hammet.

The official cause and manner of Hammet’s death are still pending.

Police responded to a burglary call around 3:45 a.m. on Friday in the 400 block of Winters Street.

When officers arrived, they found Hammett with multiple injuries in the back bedroom of a residence.

Medics arrived on the scene and pronounced the shooting victim dead.

Police say Hammett did not live at the residence and was visiting a woman when he was shot. According to investigators, 2 to 3 men broke in and shot Hammett, killing him.

The woman was not hurt, and was able to escape to a neighbor’s home to call 911.

“When they came in, she was lucky,” Sgt. Mike Godsey from the Dayton Police Department said. “She got out.”

“She got out and ran to the neighbor’s house for help, to call us for help.”

Police say neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots.

Homicide detectives were called to the scene to continue the investigation.
