MIAMISBURG, Ohio (WDTN) – A local football coach took the field for the last time before deploying overseas Saturday night.
Thomas Benton is a Miamisburg pee wee football coach, he’s also served 22 years in the United States Army. Before his team faced the Greenville Wave they released red and white balloons into the air for their hometown hero.
“Today means the world to me. It’s emotional to see what the parents did and me not know about it. That is amazing,” said Benton.
Benton coaches one of his sons and hopes his patriotism is instilled in his kids.
“I look back and never regret,” said Benton, who has two tours under his belt, including one in Korea.
Parents like Amanda Ware who helped organize the send-off says Benton is just what the town needs.
“We just love him for supporting his country,” she said.
His passion for his country translates onto the field. A motto Benton has lived by since joining the army now has a home for the Miamisburg Vikings.
“Every practice, every game I preach to them, ‘One team, one fight’,” he said.
Benton is a Staff Sargeant and will be deployed overseas for a year.
