DELAWARE CO., OH (WCMH) — The man suspected of opening fire at a rest area is dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, police tell NBC4.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office first responded to a report of a shooting just after 11am Sunday at the rest area near mile marker 129 on Interstate 71 northbound.

Ohio State Highway Patrol says a man and a woman stopped at the rest stop. The man went inside the building and when he came back out, witnesses saw the man get shot by an unknown suspect who was sitting on a park bench.

State police say the suspect shot the victim six times before fleeing. Medics found the victim in the parking lot and rushed him to Grant Medical Center in critical condition.

The Highway Patrol and Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies later located the suspect vehicle and began chasing the suspect. The pursuit came to an end after the suspects’ vehicle drove over road spikes and crashed into a guardrail on Interstate 71 northbound in Richland County.

Troopers then surrounded the vehicle. Once contact was made with the suspect, he was discovered to be deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The name of the suspect is being withheld pending notification to next of kin.
