ASHLAND, OH (WCMH) — “They were already dead.”

That’s just one sentence that accused serial killer, Shawn Grate, wrote in two letters to WEWS reporter Megan Hickey about the victims.

“They were already dead. Just their bodies were flopping where they can flop but their minds were dead,” Grate wrote in the letter.

Grate continues to say in the letters that government assistance was to blame for “taking the minds” of his victims first.

“Why is my mind eating me alive? Or has it ate me?” Grate questions at the top of the letter head.

Several bible verses about death are also mentioned in the letters.

According to WEWS, Grate admits his role of five women in the letters and sheds light on a possible motive. He also says the victims’ families have the right to know why he did it.

Grate has pleaded not guilty in two killings. Authorities say he confessed to killing two other women, including one around 2005 in Marion County. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
