PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Sweet Cakes by Melissa, the cake shop that made national headlines after refusing to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding, has closed.

The business announced its closure at the end of September.

“We have closed Sweet Cakes. We appreciate everyone’s continued prayer and support!” the business wrote on their Facebook page.

The closure comes after the owners of the cake shop, Aaron and Melissa Klein, refused to bake a cake for Laurel and Rachel Bowman-Cryer’s wedding. Oregon’s Bureau of Labor and Industries ruled that the cake shop’s refusal to bake a wedding cake for the same-sex wedding constituted unlawful discrimination.

The business was fined and paid $136,927 to BOLI.

In 2013, the Kleins closed their Gresham store and ran the business from their home.

Now, Sweet Cakes by Melissa is officially closed. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
