Child critically injured after being hit by car

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Dayton police say an 11-year-old girl is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle.

It happened shortly after six o’clock Wednesday night in the 2000 block of North Main Street, near Marathon Avenue.

According to Dayton police Lt. Mark Ponichtera, it’s unknown if the driver of the maroon Oldsmobile was under the influence or if speed was a factor.

“She was on foot and she did enter the traffic lane. I don’t know what the circumstances of her crossing the street are at the moment,” Lt. Ponichtera said, “The person driving the vehicle is very distraught.”

According to the girl’s father, William White, his daughter was walking by herself to a nearby store to buy some treats.

“She’s old enough to cross the street and she’s been crossing the street by herself for a long time now,” White said, “For her to get hit in the street today like the way she did, that ain’t her. She knows how to cross the street.”
