Florida deputy shoots woman reaching for cell phone

PAISLEY, Fla. (WESH) – A Florida woman who was driving a stolen car is in stable condition after being shot by a Lake County deputy.

Deputies said they tried to stop Robin Pearson, 51, in Paisley at about 12:20 a.m. on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle. She tried to flee before pulling over and getting out of the car, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Pearson’s car ended up in Randy Redman’s yard. The commotion woke him up.

“About 1 o’clock — I heard a gunshot,” he said.

The deputy said he told Pearson to stop when she started walking aggressively toward him, but she reached into her pocket instead. That’s when he fired.

Pearson had a cell phone in her pocket.
